Remodeling Your Home Can Boost Its Value

While my wife and I loved our home at first, after a few years, we started craving a change in scenery. We thought about remodeling it to see if that would give us the change we were looking for, but we worried that if we were still bored of our home after the remodeling project, we would have just "wasted" our money before putting it on the market. That mentality changed when we learned that some home remodeling projects can boost the value of your home greatly and even help it sell more quickly after it is put onto the market! We soon had our kitchen upgraded and a few other changes to our home and found out that it really was the change we were craving. I learned a lot about home renovations during the remodeling process, so I decided to create a blog to share my tips on!

Signs That You May Need A New Roof

Roofs are designed and built to hold up to the elements for a long time, and if properly taken care of, you may never have to completely replace this critical part of your home. With that said, if you purchased an older home a while back and have started to notice that you're calling the roofing contractors, such as Western Roofing, to come out and fix one problem or another on a more frequent basis, it might be time to consider updating the roof entirely. Here are three signs that it might be best to install a new roof.

Energy Bills Going Up

If you start to notice that you heating or cooling bills are higher than in past years and you can't seem to locate a problem with your HVAC equipment, the problem could be with your home's insulation. The insulation installed around your attic and roof is especially critical in keeping your home at the right temperature. Have a professional inspect this area for any signs of trouble. While installing a new roof might be costly, it will provide an opportunity to use more energy-efficient materials and install better insulation.

Curling

The next time it's a bright day outside, take a hard look at your entire roof. If you notice areas where the shingles are starting to curl up or buckle, this is usually an indicator that the material needs to be replaced. Fixing one or two shingles is no big deal, but once the first couple of shingles start to go, this is often a warning sign that the rest of the roof isn't far behind. A roof replacement might be the best course of action.

Drainage Problems

If you are frequently having to clean up pools of water near your house's foundation, the first area to check is of course your gutter system. But if the actual gutters seem to be OK, and you still notice pools of water after every rainstorm, take a look at the valleys on your roof. If the shingles in this area have deteriorated, the water will not flow properly off of the roof into the gutter system. If you don't get this fixed immediately, you could spring a leak.

Roofs typically last at least a couple of decades before needing to be replaced, but keep an eye out for warning signs so that you can tackle any problems that arise before you get to that point. If you notice that your energy bills are consistently higher than they used to be, you are repeatedly replacing failing shingles, or that pools of water are forming after every rainstorm thanks to water not flowing off the roof properly, it might be time for a new roof.
